    How it works

    What goes into the list?

The list is built from the same exclusion groups we apply on day one of every account we take over. It stops the obvious waste before the first click. What it does not do is read your search terms report, which is where the rest of the waste hides.

    • Who you sell to. B2B, B2C and DTC each switch on a different default set, because a wholesale query is waste for a DTC brand and a consumer query is waste for a SaaS company.

    • Industry packs. Terms that burn spend in your market specifically, from SaaS, fintech and cybersecurity to apparel, pets and home services.

    • Exclusion groups. Job seekers, free and pirated, cheap and coupons, students and academia, informational and DIY, marketplaces and second-hand, local and in-store, existing customers and support, company news and investors, and more.

    • Match type. Phrase by default, the safe choice for negatives. Exact and broad are there if you know what you want.

    • Your own exclusions. Competitor names and anything else you never want to show against, one per line, added to the list as you type them.

    Why do negative keywords matter?

Google and Microsoft match your keywords to far more searches than you bid on, and you pay for every click, whether it came from a buyer or a student writing an essay.

Without negatives, a meaningful share of search budget goes to people who will never buy: job seekers, bargain hunters, DIYers, people after the free version. Smart Bidding then learns from those clicks and keeps finding more of them.

A negative keyword list applied before launch stops the waste the platforms will never stop for you. It is the first thing we add to any account, and the search terms report tells us what to add next.

A wasted click "crm jobs", $1.60, never a buyer Polluted conversion data A form fill from someone job hunting Smart Bidding learns "More like that one, please" More wasted clicks Bids go up on the wrong searches NEGATIVE KEYWORD LIST Breaks the loop before the first click THE FEEDBACK LOOP Every paid click is a lesson Without negatives, the platform learns from the wrong clicks and buys more of them. The list keeps those searches out of the data the bidding is trained on.

Google Ads and Microsoft Ads. Download the CSV and import it as a shared negative keyword list, or copy the list and paste it in. Each line carries the match type you picked.

Phrase, unless you have a reason not to. Phrase negatives block any search that contains the term in that order. Exact only blocks the identical query, which misses most variations. Broad blocks any search containing all the words in any order, which is powerful and easy to overdo.

It can, which is why every group is a switch. The list includes "free", so delete that line if you offer a free trial, a free plan or free shipping. Apply the list, then review your search terms report after two weeks and remove anything it caught that you wanted.

Google suggests negatives after you have paid for the clicks, from your own search terms. This list is built from what wastes spend across accounts like yours, so it goes in before launch. The two work together: this stops the predictable waste, the search terms report finds the rest.

That is what managed PPC covers, and if your conversion data is not clean, the free tracking checker is the place to start.
